Cable Smart

Since its establishment in 1992, Dimensione Ingenierie never settled for the present, but has always had a push towards the future that has led us all to evolve our way of working in innovative and unconventional ways.
From this passion for innovation, the CABLESMART project was born, an innovative urban mobility system that aims to be part of the solution to one of the main problems afflicting cities worldwide: traffic. CABLESMART is a system that derives from the hybridization of traditional cableway technologies with the latest smart mobility technologies able to respond effectively, efficiently and smartly to the needs of speed, modulability, privacy and reliability that the modern traveler requires from a transport system. CABLESMART is the way of Dimensione Ingenierie to make its contribution to the improvement of cities and the quality of life of its inhabitants. We have the dream of "leaving this world a little better than we found it", and CABLESMART is one of the tools through which we want to achieve this goal.


There is a growing and huge demand for urban mobility in the world, which the traditional transport systems meet in many cases only in a partial and inefficient way.
The public transport sector in many cases offers an inadequate response to the demand for urban mobility: traditional urban public transport is largely linked to obsolete technologies dating back to the second half of the 19th century. The need for privacy, on-demand usability, comfort and personalization of the itinerary of current transport systems remains largely unanswered.
For these reasons a real revolution in urban transport is necessary, a change of paradigm of which CABLESMART is integral part of. This change of paradigm is made possible today by the exponential development of sectors such as information technology, mechatronics, industrial automation, energy storage, communication and electric mobility, the integration of these technologies with the traditional cable-clamping ropeway systems enables the creation of a collective mobility system that will allow the enhancement and redevelopment of urban areas.


Each vehicle can move in two ways: it can be tied to a rope as in a traditional cableway system, or it can move independently on rails by using 4 motor-wheels powered by supercapacitors and batteries.

The SMARTVEHICLE is designed to maximize passengers comfort: each vehicle has a capacity of 8-10 people, and it includes air conditioning, wi-fi, screens.


CABLESMART system allows the complete stop of the vehicle at the station, permitting a comfortable loading and unloading of passengers on board. This is possible thanks to the innovative CABLESMART system, which provides that vehicles entering the station leave the main line and stop completely in the areas of interchange without hindering the motion of vehicles in transit. Since the propulsion system is internal to the vehicle, the stations do not need to contain cumbersome and noisy mechanical systems. The SMARTSTATION thus has a limited footprint (comparable to a bus station), and it is easily integrated into the urban context.

The double movement system (rope and motor wheels) allows to reconcile the advantages of a cableway system - possibility of overcoming high gradients and geographically complicated areas with a limited impact on the ground - with the wheeled based system ones - possibility of making curves with a radius of less than 3 meters - CABLESMART allows passengers to choose "on-demand" departure and destination of their trip. Each vehicle can in fact move in the infrastructure network independently. These prerogatives define CABLESMART as a PRT (personal rapid transit) but with the enormous advantage of adopting proven and reliable technologies that refer to a real regulatory framework.


CABLESMART in the rope sections, has balanced vehicles and line, therefore the energy required for its motion is exclusively the one required to move the payload and to overcome the frictions. When the vehicle is moving on rails, it uses the energy stored on board (through lithium accumulators and supercapacitors). This energy is produced during the deceleration phases and downhill paths and consumed during acceleration and uphill routes, balancing the energy requirements to a large extent . The vehicles are highly technological and therefore the energy contribution necessary to their air conditioning and communication is reduced to a minimum. The CABLESMART driving stations are equipped with energy storage and balancing systems to optimize energy consumption within 24 hours. The vast majority of the energy consumed by the system is produced by photovoltaic panels installed on the stations, on the rail line and on top of the vehicles.
